Campus BBQ Joint Freedmen's Bar & Smokehouse to Close

Sad news, y'all. Freedmen's Bar & Smokehouse will be vacating its current home in West Campus on August 31! What?!

Earlier this summer, the owner sold the 1869 building after word got out that an apartment developer would build around the spot, meaning Freedmen's parking lot would disappear. The name Freedmen's came from the building itself, which was originally built by a former slave and played an important part in the early African-American community in Austin. 

It's said that Freedmen's will relocate, but there's no word yet on where that will be. I'm definitely sad, as I LOVE the current building and its delicious barbecue and cocktail program. Here's hoping it comes back soon!
